Spectrum outage

Spectrum (Charter Communications) is the second-largest cable ISP in the US, serving a network that still includes legacy Time Warner Cable and Bright House plant in many markets. Outage recognition is typically fast in the My Spectrum app, but Charter's public status page is one of the sparser in the industry, you often confirm an incident by calling or checking the app rather than a website. Most outages are node-level and resolve within a few hours.

Check Spectrum outage status

The Spectrum status page is the only real-time source. Use it first, this guide explains what to do next.

This page does not reflect real-time outage status. Always check Spectrum's official status page (linked above) for current incidents. Our guide covers what to do, how to report the problem, and how to request a credit, but the live state of the network is only accurate on Spectrum's own status tools.

Service impact and typical duration

What's affected

Spectrum Internet and Spectrum Voice share the same cable plant, so both go down together during a node outage. Spectrum TV cable set-top boxes lose on-demand, DVR playback, and guide data when internet is down, though live channels often keep working on the coax signal. Spectrum TV Stream app requires working internet from any provider. Spectrum Mobile uses Verizon's network and stays up independently.

Typical restoration time

Node reboots and software issues: under an hour. Amplifier swaps and minor plant repairs: 2-6 hours. Fiber cuts or storm damage: 6-24 hours. Major regional events can extend to 72 hours.

How to report a Spectrum outage

The fastest way to confirm an incident and get notified when service returns.

  • My Spectrum app

Open the app and tap Services. An active outage shows a banner at the top with an ETR. Tap it to opt into restoration text alerts. This is the most reliable real-time source.

  • Text 'OUT' to 73765 (SPECT)

From a phone on the Spectrum account, returns the current outage status for the service address. Works even if your internet is down.

  • Spectrum outage status page

spectrum.net/support/general/spectrum-service-outages, sign in with your Spectrum username to see if your specific location has an open ticket.

  • Ask Spectrum chat

The chat bot at spectrum.net/contact-us can confirm known outages and escalate to a live agent if the app shows nothing but your service is down.

What to do during a Spectrum outage

  1. Check the My Spectrum app for a confirmed outage

Open the app and tap Services. A red banner with an ETR means Charter has opened a ticket. Tap 'Get alerts' to receive a text when service is restored.

  2. Text OUT to 73765 from the account-holder phone

If the app isn't loading, a text from the phone number on file returns current outage status in under a minute without needing data.

  3. Restart the Spectrum modem and router

Unplug both for 60 seconds, plug the modem in first, wait 3 minutes for it to sync, then plug the router in. If the modem's online light doesn't return steady, the signal isn't reaching your home.

  4. Check the coax connections

Spectrum's cable plant is sensitive to loose or damaged F-connectors. Hand-tighten the coax at the wall plate and at the modem. If the line looks damaged (cracked sheath, bent pin), call to schedule a line replacement.

  5. Opt into restoration alerts

In the outage banner, tap 'Notify me'. Charter will text the number on file once the ticket closes, which is usually faster than the status page refreshes.

  6. Call 1-833-267-6094 if no outage is reported but service is down

Spectrum's dedicated outage line routes faster than the main support number. Ask the agent to 'run a line signal test', that's what triggers a field dispatch if the signal is below spec.

  7. Request a credit after service returns

Charter publicly states it applies credits for confirmed outages on request. Call or chat in after restoration and reference the outage ticket number.

Common causes of Spectrum outages

  • Node outages on legacy coax plant, Charter inherited older DOCSIS infrastructure from Time Warner and Bright House; amplifier and node failures are the most frequent cause of neighborhood-level drops.
  • Upstream fiber cuts, long-haul fiber damage takes out regional markets, especially in metro areas with heavy construction. Restoration runs 6-18 hours.
  • Power loss at plant, Charter's node batteries carry service for roughly 4 hours. Extended utility outages will pull Spectrum down even on otherwise-lit streets.
  • Maintenance windows, Charter schedules most plant work between 2am and 6am local time, and node reboots during that window commonly show as brief outages.
  • Weather-related ingress, heavy rain can cause signal ingress on aging coax, degrading speeds and causing intermittent drops rather than a clean outage.

Outage credit policy

Charter's publicly-stated policy is to credit customers for confirmed outages on request. Credits are typically applied at one day's prorated service per 24-hour outage, but thresholds and amounts vary, call to request. Auto-credits are not standard; you usually have to ask.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if Spectrum is down in my area?
Open the My Spectrum app and tap Services, an active outage shows a banner. You can also text OUT to 73765 from the phone number on your account, or check spectrum.net/support/general/spectrum-service-outages after signing in. This page is not real-time.
Why does Spectrum's status page say no outage when I have no service?
Charter's public status page lags behind the My Spectrum app by 15-30 minutes because it only lists tickets that have been triaged and assigned. Trust the app first. If the app also shows nothing, power-cycle your modem, a single-home issue won't show on either status source.
Does Spectrum Mobile work when my internet is out?
Yes. Spectrum Mobile runs on Verizon's cellular network, so it stays up during Charter cable outages. You can hotspot from a Spectrum Mobile phone to bridge your home network until service returns.
How long do Spectrum outages usually last?
Node-level outages typically resolve in 1-3 hours. Fiber cuts and storm damage run 6-24 hours. Charter's field response is generally faster than Comcast's for urban markets and slower than fiber providers for buried-plant repairs.
Will Spectrum credit me for the downtime?
Yes, on request. Charter's policy is to apply a prorated service credit for confirmed outages when you call or chat in after restoration. The credit is typically one day's prorated service per 24-hour outage but varies by market. It rarely posts automatically.
Does Spectrum TV keep working during an internet outage?
Traditional cable TV channels often stay up on the coax signal even if the DOCSIS modem is down, but any feature that requires internet, on-demand, DVR streaming, the Spectrum TV app, guide updates, will fail. Most newer Spectrum TV boxes route through IP and will go dark entirely.
Should I call support or wait it out?
If the My Spectrum app already shows a confirmed outage with an ETR, calling won't speed it up, the field team is already dispatched. Call only if your service is down and neither the app nor a text to 73765 shows an active outage; that's the signal you may have an isolated account or modem problem.
Can I get an auto-refund if I experience frequent outages?
Charter does not offer automatic reliability credits, but repeated outages on the same node can qualify for a 'chronic trouble' case. Call support and ask to open one, that triggers a field inspection of the node and can result in ongoing credits if the issue isn't resolved quickly.

If outages keep affecting you, it's worth seeing what else is available at your address.
